Pétanque (French pronunciation is [petonk]) is a game of boules where the goal is, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground, to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (literally “piglet”) or jack.  The game is normally played on hard dirt or gravel, but can also be played on grass, sand or other surfaces.

The current form of the pétanque game originated in 1907 in La Ciotat in southern France. The name pétanque comes from pès tancats meaning “feet together” or “feet anchored” in the Provençal dialect of the Occitan language.

Eventually, pétanque took roots in Edmonds in the Summer of 2010, when more and more players joined the group for regular games.

Their expanded group of petanque players was then formally incorporated as a non-profit sports organization in January 2011, under the name “Edmonds Petanque Club,” with an affiliation to the Federation of Petanque USA and the Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP), which gives club members a license to participate in other clubs’ events nationally and internationally.  Anyone of any age may apply for membership in the Edmonds Petanque Club for a modest annual fee, whether it is just for casual fun (most of us) or serious competition.

The petanque courts are always available to the public and you do not have to be a member to play.  Come and join them any time for a game or two.

Marjorie Fiddler is a handweaver and dyer who creates one-of-a-kind wool rugs on linen warp. Her studio is in Edmonds, in Washington
State.

Marjorie’s striking use of color and exceptional workmanship result in works of art that are equally beautiful adoring a wall or functioning
as hardwearing floor coverings. She taught her self to weave over thirty years ago, using a large floor loom stored in the occupational therapy department of a Boston hospital. Weaving books provided excellent diagrams, calculations, and detailed instructions. Preindustrial mechanical devices were manageable and fun. A complicated overshot coverlet patterned after an early colonial example was one of her first projects.

Work, family, space, and time pressures first limited and then totally displaced weaving. Textile addiction was still a major force and
had to be satisfied by knitting, creating patchwork quilts, and admiring the work of others.

In 2005 Marjorie returned to weaving, first taking a course at the Weaving Works in Seattle, and then joining the Seattle Weavers’ Guild.
Speakers and workshops organized through the guild provide ongoing education and challenge, and talented colleagues provide support and encouragement. Marjorie’s ongoing interest has been weaving rugs, many of which are showcased in the portfolio.

AWARDS

ANWG Conference 2011   Best of Show awarded to Fiddler’s rug, “Overdye.”

ANWG Conference 2009  Second Place awarded to Fiddler’s rug, “Reflection.”

Celtic Cowboy BBQ is a takeout and catering company in Edmonds, Washington. They use a selection of Washington State woods to slow smoke their meats. All products are made from scratch with recipes Steve and Lisa have either created or inherited from their Scottish and Southern friends and family!

In the late 1990s, Steve moved to Dallas, Texas where he met my wife, Lisa. Lisa and Steve moved to Austin, which is where he learned how to smoke barbeque. The first pit that Steve ever used was a converted 1940s water heater that his next door neighbor’s Dad made. After his first experience of cooking real barbeque, Steve  never looked back.

They moved to Seattle in 2000, and the fire for smoking meat was still in his heart so Steve started experimenting with different woods and tastes from the Northwest. After several annual barbeque events at their home, he decided to follow his instincts and with the encouragement of family, friends and neighbors to start his catering business.

In addition, their annual barbeque has turned into a charitable event for the local food banks and various other charities. The chance to share his passion for barbeque and help out others at the same time was too good to pass up!
