Yost Park

A map of Yost Park Trails can be seen by clicking here.

Yost Memorial Park today contains one of the few areas of native vegetation that remain in Edmonds. The mixed stands of Western red cedar, red alder, big-leaf maple and western hemlock trees offer a glimpse into the past, and the future.

The Park is situated along Shell Creek and the deep ravine its waters carved over time. Shell Creek empties into Puget Sound north of Caspers Street, and is populated with numerous insects, amphibians, and even salmon!

The area was logged in the early 1900’s, and the large evergreen logs were processed into shingles and lumber in mills along the Edmonds waterfront. Deciduous trees such as red alder subsequently “colonized” the logged area, and over time bacteria in the alder trees’ roots fixed nitrogen from the air, storing it in root nodules which replenish depleted soil nitrogen. As the short lived Alders (50 – 70 yrs.) begin to die and fall, a new generation of evergreens will take their place, supported by the revitalized soil. The next half century will see Yost Park once again dominated by native evergreen trees.

The Edmonds Station is a passenger train station in Edmonds, Washington. It is a stop for Amtrak’s Empire Builder and Cascades trains, as well as for Sound Transit‘s Sounder Commuter Rail on the north line. The station, platform, and parking are owned by BNSF Railway.

Sound Transit formerly planned to relocate Edmonds station as part of the larger Edmonds Crossing Multi-modal project being led by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). That plan was shelved in favor of renovating the station in place, a project expected to cost $12.9 million and be completed in early 2011.

The Swamp Creek & Western Railroad Association (a model railroaders’ group) operates from the Edmonds Amtrak Station.

If you’re looking for a new type of activity with a little international flavor, you’re in luck. Recently a new game has become available in Edmonds: Pétanque (pronounced “pay-tonk”). A pétanque court has been built at the Edmonds Civic Playfield. A sign is being prepared by Edmonds Parks & Recreation detailing the rules. Michelle Martin, a French native and Edmonds’ resident, had the idea of building the pétanque court. With the help of John Hunt, president of the Seattle Pétanque Club, and Brian McIntosh and Rich Lindsay from Edmonds Parks & Recreation, we have now a splendid court of the highest quality.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, a celebration of the new court will be held.

Several members of the Seattle Pétanque Club will be present to demonstrate the game and provide some coaching. Pétanque is a game played all over France, and is one of Europe’s most popular games. It is gaining worldwide popularity. Every traveler who has been in France loves to watch or participate. It is a very social and convivial game that everyone can play. Pétanque is a cousin of both horseshoes and the Italian bowling game bocce. It originated in the south of France in the early 1900s.
